Art
Trek studio classes offer a friendly and
non-judgmental
workshop environment for students of all ages. We believe
that doing art enhances many other life skills such as
problem solving, synthesizing information into original and
thoughtful ideas, having the confidence to start and finish
an idea, and acquiring the ability to get past obstacles
that can stop us in our creative track.
Art
Trek is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization for the schools is a community outreach program
that
trains parents and other volunteer docents to go into the
classroom to deliver sequential, hands-on art lessons. Our
lessons are designed not only to impart rendering, painting,
and sculpting skills, but also to build student confidence
and community ties.

The
lessons follow the elements of art: line, shape, color,
form, space, and texture. Materials for the lessons include
pastels, acrylic and tempera paints, watercolors, clay,
chalks, and colored pencils. Some biographical information
and art prints of related great past art masters and
recognized contemporary artists are incorporated into each
lesson. The majority of the hour lesson is devoted to
student work.
| The
classes are taught by volunteer docents who attend art
workshops at which they: |
| 1.) |
Complete related projects that they will teach. |
| 2.) |
Receive training on effective teaching methods. |
| 3.) |
Spend time discussing and troubleshooting questions that
might arise while teaching. |
Art
Trek is a cost effective and wonderful way to bring the
visual arts into the classroom and to strengthen the
volunteer core of a school.
Most
importantly, Art Trek's mission is to create a positive and
confidence-building experience for the students while they
problem-solve and take some artistic risk to produce their
work.

Although
Lorelle was a theater major at Northwestern
University, she also took many art classes while
studying there. While working as a professional
actress, she spent MANY hours at the Pottery Studio
indulging her “clay addiction.” She gave up both
acting and clay when she had her two sons and became
a full time Mom. Needing a less-messy-stay-at-home
creative outlet, she took up quilting. This is
Lorelle’s seventh year teaching with Art Trek, and
her quilting space is now covered with painting
supplies.

Growing
up in L.A., the mecca of the entertainment industry and having
a Mom who was a cartoonist for Hanna Barbara, how could she
not get involved in the arts? Nanelle graduated from a
Catholic High School in the Valley and from the Interior
Design Institute in Newport Beach and immediately jumped into
the design world. She worked for a relatively large model home
design firm called Creative Design Consultants for many
years. Nanelle became a Docent for Art Trek in Palos
Verdes! She jumped at the chance not only to teach art but
also to give back to the community! Nanelle currently teaches
in 6 downtown Los Angeles schools.

Like so many of our staff members, Sherry got involved
with Art Trek as a volunteer docent in her children’s
classrooms. Sherry has been on staff at Art Trek for 10 years,
following her many volunteer years in the Ojai schools. An
active environmentalist, an outdoor educator and enthusiast,
an open-space advocate and a watercolorist in her own right,
Sherry brings organizational talent,
teaching excellence and
arts devotion to our program.
